VBrick’s VBoss enables U.S. Department of Homeland Security to Reach Thousands of Viewers on Preparedness

dhsvideoplayerIn a time of unparalleled transparency the United States Government is actively utilizing new media tools to reach a more engaged online audience. The biggest challenge is how to enable many different U.S. Commands, Agencies, and Organizations with the ability to create streaming broadcasts or webinars easily and effectively without having to have a large IT staff, additional network infrastructure, expensive broadcast production facilities, and management.

On Tuesday  the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, delivered a speech from the American Red Cross regarding the shared responsibility of preparedness. They faced the dilemma of how to reach an audience that was not located within the building and geographically dispersed on the Internet, as well as make it publicly available – and they only had one day to get this speech broadcast live online.

VBrick, and partner LTI DataComm, were able to provide the Department of Homeland Security with just the right solution. An appliance-based Windows Media encoder was brought into the American Red Cross building, simple cut and past code put on the DHS website, and they were ready to go.

The speech was broadcast using VBoss, VBrick’s Online Streaming Service, which is a managed and hosted service for streaming live and on-demand video to the Internet. What makes this solution great for this type of applications is that the encoder is completely managed, keeping hands-on configuration to a bare minimum. All you need is a camera and microphone, plug it into the VBrick WM encoder, and the VBoss platform does the rest. If you have an existing videoconferencing system you can easily hook the VBrick WM encoder to it without, creating a mini-broadcast studio. VBoss utilizes the Akimai’s global content delivery network, so their video was seen by a large and geographically dispersed audience.
