Ecosystem Feature: Wowza Media Server

wowzaThe VBrick H.264 appliance works well with the Wowza Media Server which can turn the H.264 stream into live Flash with their current release. Their next release, that I expect later this year, will take the same stream from our appliance and rebroadcast it live to the iPhone, to Silverlight via the Microsoft SmoothStream protocol, and to a set top box via MPEG-2 Transport protocol. The VBrick SD Appliance is priced below $10k which is much lower than the two other encoders that are currently recommended for live iPhone streaming but has the additional benefit of being much more reliable (with an embedded operating system). I think that these would be well suited for a 24/7 live television broadcast that needs to reach Flash, iPhone, Silverlight, and set top boxes. We have also tested video streaming from our H264 appliance to a new Blackberry Curve and this works as well. The next release of the Wowza Media Server will relay live these RTSP streams as well.

With the Wowza Media Server and the VBrick H.264 appliance, customers can deliver live video to “three screens” with one encoder: the MAC or PC with Flash or Silverlight, the iPhone or Blackberry via HTTP chunking or RTSP, and the set top box via standard MPEG-2 Transport protocol.
